Gnation is ALPHA SOFTWARE. It currently has the following
capabilities:
Determine country of existing hostnames or IPv4 addresses. This
is accomplished by using clues such as country-code top-level domains (like
.ca or .uk), IP ranges (47.0.0.0 - 47.255.255.255 belongs to Canada), and
WHOIS server lookups. Gnation talks to the ARIN, RIPE, and APNIC databases
directly, and they refer to other NICs when appropriate. All of these clues
can only tell us where a domain was registered: a machine under that domain
might well be in a different country, but the vast majority of internet
boxes are not connected to their providers across country lines.
Gnation should be used with the
WHOIS client by Marco d'Itri
provided with Debian; other clients may not understand the command line
options used. This will be changed in future releases.
